Early voting is surging: about 29 million ballots already cast, one week out

With seven days left until the Nov. 3 midterms, about 29 million Americans have already voted early — a record-breaking pace for a midterm, with campaigns making their final push in the races that will decide Congress.

Virginia is the standout: early turnout there is running at nearly double the last midterm at this point, a sign of how much energy — and how much money — has poured into a cycle that will hand the winners control of the House and a third of the Senate.

The AI capital race sprints: a $2 trillion IPO filing, a $95 billion raise, a $40 billion chip deal

The money flooding into AI hit a new gear on Monday: Anthropic filed for an IPO that could value it at up to $2 trillion, Meta announced plans to raise up to $95 billion, and SpaceX struck a $40 billion Apollo-backed AI chip deal — all as the Fed is expected to hold rates steady this week with oil near a six-month high.

Democracy Now! Headlines — Monday, Oct. 26, 2026

Monday's edition leads with Lula's upset victory in Brazil and Serbia's student-led movement ousting strongman Aleksandar Vučić — then turns to Diana Buttu on the question hanging over Israel's upcoming elections: whether ousting Netanyahu would change anything for Palestinians.

World News

Gaza and the wider world — reported plainly.

The wider world, on its own desk: a left victory in Brasília, as Lula takes a fourth term — and in Gaza, where a UN commission says the genocide never stopped even after the truce, the "Yellow Line" is hardening into a border drawn in rubble.

Lula wins a historic fourth term in Brazil

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won Sunday's presidential runoff with about 51.8% of the vote, defeating right-wing Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro to secure a fourth term — a capstone comeback for the former union leader who has defined Brazil's left for a generation.

The result may not settle quietly: Bolsonaro said he would seek to annul the outcome after a court extended voting by two hours on election day.

UN inquiry: Israel kept committing genocide in Gaza after the truce

A UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry report published Monday finds that genocidal acts continued in Gaza after last October's U.S.-brokered ceasefire — citing heavy munitions used in populated areas and the "Yellow Line" hardening into a de facto border inside the strip.

Israel dismissed the findings as a misinformation campaign.

Michigan Senate: El-Sayed holds a narrow edge — and Mamdani says the win matters for New York

A Marist poll reported Monday puts Democrat Abdul El-Sayed at 50% to Republican Mike Rogers' 48% among likely voters in Michigan's Senate race — a lead inside the margin of error, with seven days to close it.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called an El-Sayed win "of critical importance" to New York, pointing to the fights the two share: against super PAC money, for Medicare for All, and on the cost of living squeezing working families in both states.

The Socialist Slate

The democratic socialists carrying the movement into November.

Four names to know. Each one is running — or governing — on the same basic idea: the economy should work for the people who do the work. Here is who they are, what they stand for, and where the latest polls put them.

U.S. Senate · Michigan

Abdul El-Sayed

A physician and epidemiologist who rebuilt Detroit’s public health department as the city’s health director, El-Sayed has spent his career treating healthcare as a public good — in clinic rooms, in city government, and now in a run for the U.S. Senate. Backed by Bernie Sanders, AOC and the movement, he won the Democratic nomination to fight for Gary Peters’ open seat.

Running on — Medicare for All, getting corporate money out of politics, and rebuilding an economy that works for working families instead of donors.

Momentum — The money fight is on: Bernie Sanders sent $1M to El-Sayed's campaign on Oct. 22 after reports that AIPAC planned up to $9M for a pro-Rogers super PAC — AOC had already given $1M — and Zohran Mamdani backed El-Sayed on Oct. 20, calling his victory critical to a new course in Washington. The pro-Rogers Great Lakes Conservatives Fund has also announced a $4.6M Michigan ad buy.

Mayor · New York City

Zohran Mamdani

A Queens assemblymember and Democratic Socialists of America member who won the mayor’s office on one word — affordability — Mamdani is now the highest-profile democratic socialist governing in America. His first year at City Hall has been about turning a campaign platform into policy for the most expensive city in the country.

Running City Hall on — freezing the rent for stabilized apartments, fast and free buses, universal childcare, and city-owned grocery stores, paid for by asking the wealthiest New Yorkers and big corporations to pay their fair share.

On the trail — Mamdani campaigned with Gov. Kathy Hochul in Brooklyn on Friday, Oct. 23, the first time he outright campaigned for her re-election ahead of the Nov. 3 midterms.

52%in the new Fox News poll — Mamdani 52%, Cuomo 28%, Sliwa 14% among likely voters
Fox News Poll · released Oct. 22, 2026 (conducted Oct. 10–14 by Beacon Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R); 1,003 NYC registered voters, ±3 pts; 793 likely voters, ±3.5) — Mamdani 52, Cuomo 28, Sliwa 14 among likely voters: a 21-point lead, up about 5 points since September. Top issues: crime, cost of living, housing; 66% say ICE is “too aggressive” in NYC.
U.S. Senate · Florida

Angie Nixon

A Jacksonville state representative, author and small-business owner, Nixon is the DSA’s nationally endorsed Senate candidate in Florida — and she got there by beating the Democratic establishment’s pick in the August primary. She’s running to finish Marco Rubio’s term against appointed Sen. Ashley Moody, with Bernie Sanders barnstorming the state beside her.

Running on — reining in the insurance companies and corporate landlords driving Florida’s cost-of-living crisis, expanding Medicaid, and fighting for housing Floridians can actually afford.

Momentum — Ro Khanna campaigned with her in Florida this week, and she took her Senate case to The Find Out Podcast.

Mai Vang

The daughter of Hmong refugees and a Sacramento city council member since 2020, Vang co-founded Hmong Innovating Politics to organize Southeast Asian American and Pacific Islander communities into political power. Her challenge to a 21-year incumbent became one of the breakout progressive campaigns of the cycle — and voters rewarded it.

Running on — Medicare for All, housing working families can afford, defending immigrant communities, and a generational changing of the guard in Congress.

This week — Vang pledged to oppose automatic license plate readers, citing privacy, civil liberties and the risk of immigration-enforcement access to location data; Matsui's campaign answered by attacking her record.

31%of the primary vote — first place, ahead of Rep. Doris Matsui’s 29%
Official results · June 2026 top-two primary — Vang 31.2%, Matsui 29.1%; the two Democrats meet again in the Nov. 3 general election. See her record →

The Platform

What HardLeft stands for — and how much of America is already there.

Ten planks, stated plainly. Under each one is the most recent national polling we can put a name and a date to — because the positions on this page keep getting called “radical” while quietly polling like the majority. This isn’t the fringe. It’s the program.

Plank 01

Abolish ICE

Shut down the agency built for raids, cages and deportation quotas — and replace it with a humane immigration system that treats people as neighbors, not targets.

50%of Americans support abolishing ICE
YouGov · July 2026 — support hit 50% for the first time, against 39–40% opposed. See the poll coverage →
Plank 02

Prison Reform

End mass incarceration: shrink the prison population, kill mandatory minimums, and put the savings into drug treatment, mental health care and second chances.

81%of likely voters support criminal justice reform
Benenson Strategy Group for FWD.us · 2024 — including 76% of Republicans; 72% say reducing the number of people behind bars is important. See the poll coverage →
Plank 03

Medicare for All

Healthcare is a human right, not a job perk. One public plan that covers everyone — no premiums, no deductibles, no medical bankruptcies.

66%of Americans favor a national health plan
KFF Health Tracking Poll · September 2026 — the highest support KFF has recorded since it began asking in 2016, up from 53% in 2020. See the poll →
Plank 04

Housing for All

A home is a human need, not an asset class. Build housing at scale, cap the rent hikes, house the unhoused — and treat shelter as infrastructure, not speculation.

77%say there should be policies that make homes more affordable
Ipsos for Redfin · May 2026 — 76% also back caps on rent increases and 75% back building homes for low-income families. See the survey →
Plank 05

A Living Wage

No one working full-time should live in poverty. Raise the wage floor until it covers rent, food and a life — then index it, so it never quietly rots back to $7.25 again.

83%say the federal minimum wage should be increased
The Harris Poll for Yahoo Finance — the same share say $7.25 an hour is not enough to live on; the median wage Americans support is $15. See the poll →
Plank 06

Workers’ Rights

Every worker deserves a union, a safe workplace and a real say on the job. Organizing should be a right protected in law — not a firing offense dressed up as policy.

71%of Americans approve of labor unions
Gallup · August 2026 — a record-high 47% want unions to have more influence, nearly double the 23% who want them weaker. See the poll →
Plank 07

Abortion Rights

Bodily autonomy is non-negotiable. Abortion care is healthcare — legal in every state, decided by patients and doctors, never by politicians and prosecutors.

60%say abortion should be legal in all or most cases
Pew Research Center · January 2026 — a majority has held this position in every Pew survey since 1995. See the poll →
Plank 08

Legalize Marijuana

End prohibition nationwide: legal cannabis, expunged records, and an end to the drug war’s easiest excuse for a stop, a search and a ruined life.

64%of Americans say marijuana should be legal
Gallup · October 2025 — support has held at roughly two-thirds or better since 2019, up from 12% when Gallup first asked in 1969. See the poll →
Plank 09

Money Out of Politics

Overturn Citizens United, ban dark money and publicly finance elections — so a representative answers to the voters back home, not to the donor class.

82%favor amending the Constitution to overturn Citizens United
Program for Public Consultation, University of Maryland · 2026 — 85% of Democrats and 82% of Republicans alike. See the study →
Plank 10

A Palestinian State

Self-determination is not a bargaining chip. The United States should recognize an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza — and stop bankrolling the alternative.

57%of Americans favor an independent Palestinian state
Gallup · February 2026 — near the 23-year high on the question, with support at 77% among Democrats and 57% among independents. See the poll →

Methodology note: each figure is the pollster’s own topline for the question shown, linked at the source. Polls ask different questions in different words — that’s the point of printing them. When a fresher number exists, this page gets updated, not the plank.
